Conclusions of the First All-Russian youth festival of informatics, programming and computer technologies
     

On the 3rd of June work was completed on the First All-Russian youth festival of informatics, programming and computer technology.  The festival ran from the 30th of June to the 3rd of July 2006 in St Petersburg.  The organisers or the event were the St Petersburg State University of Information Technology, Mechanics and Optics (SPbGU ITMO) and the St Petersburg Inter-Regional Association of Further Education (SPb MADO) with the support of the Department of State Youth Policy, Upbringing and Social Protection of Children of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation and the Committee of Youth Politics and Community Organisation Relations of the Government of St Petersburg.

The purpose of the event was the practical dissemination of information on the latest achievements in informatics, programming and computer technologies, the professional orientation of the participants, help in the informed choice of specialisations, and continuation of education in higher educational establishments of the Russian Federation.  Members of the ninth and tenth grades of higher educational establishments of Russian Regions and centres of further education were invited to participate as teams, and 11th grade students as private individuals.

Altogether 174 people from 67 towns and cities and 37 Regions of Russia took part in the festival.  They came from: Mosow, St Petersburg, The Republic of Buratiya, Dagestan, Komy, Mary El, Sakha (Yakutia), Tatarstan, Udmurtsky Republic, and the  Krasnodarsk, Primorsk, Stavropol, administrative districts, and the Arkhangelsk, Astrakhan, Bryansk, Vladimir, Volgograd, Kaliningrad, Kaluzhsky, Leningrad,  Murmansk,  Nizhegorod, Orenburg, Penzensk, Perm, Rostov, Samara, Saratov, Sverlovsk, Tversk, Tyumen, Chelyabinsk  and Yaroslav regions.

The festival included team  championships in informatics, and the basics of programming, competitions in computer graphics, intellectual and creative competitions, cultural , educational and professional orientation events. For the team leaders there were master classes in innovative methods for teaching senior pupils informatics and programming, and preparation of pupils for taking part in Olympiads at different levels.

In the A.S. Popov Central Museum of Communications, presentations took place of innovative projects of the St Petersburg Inter-Regional Association of Further Education, amongst which was a project “Russian school informatics” and also the presentation of a project of the St Petersburg State University of Information Technology, Mechanics and Optics “Research activity of students”.

A significant element of the programme was the  meeting of  the participants with the IT specialists and master class professors of the St Petersburg State University of Information Technology, Mechanics and Optics.

So a meeting took place in the Popov Central Museum of Communications between the festival participants and representatives of the studio Render.ru, which is one of the leaders in the Russian market of computer graphics and animation.  As part of the ALS Group, the studio has a powerful information support of the biggest internet resource in graphics and plays at a world level, working with the leading western organizations in the sector.

In the Festival events, the representatives of the Render.ru studio introduced the Festival participants to the features and possibilities of three-dimensional computer graphics, and answered interesting questions, including one  about the possibilities of the Information and Training Centre for Computer Graphics which was organised with the support of the ALS Group.

On the last day of the Festival there was a master class entitled “Introduction to Programming” by T.A. Pavlovskaya, professor of  the St Petersburg State University of Information Technology, Mechanics and Optics.

The Festival’s cultural programme included an excursion around St Petersburg, when the young people visited the Peter and Paul Fortress, the Popov Central Museum of Communications, and  the St Petersburg zoo.  They also took part in an “Evening of Friendship” which included a concert organised by the students’ “Classical Music-Lovers Club of the St Petersburg State University of Information Technology, Mechanics and Optics and a presentation “Team Visiting Cards” For the last evening of the Festival a programme “The white nights of St Petersburg” was organised, with a steamer trip along the Neva.

As a result of a three-round contest in the field of informatics, programming and computer graphics, the winner of the First All-Russian youth Festival of informatics, programming and computer technologies, with the highest marks was the team from Orenburg. And the 1st Class diploma was awarded to the team from the town of Kachkanar (Sverdlovsk region) and Kalugy.  The 2nd Class diploma was awarded to the teams from Nizhny Novgorod, Saratov and Gatchina (Leningrad region); the 3rd Class diplomas to the teams from Tosno (Leningrad region), Rybinska (Yaroslav region), Balakovo (Saratov region), Kazan (Republic of Tatarstan). The participants from grade 11 were selected in a separate ranking: Third Class diploma was received by the team from the town of Lomonosov (Leningrad region), the 2nd Class by the team from St Petersburg ,and the 1st by the team from the Izhevska Udmutsky Republic.
