Does Russia need 3D specialists?

Modern cinema, animated cartoons, computer games, advertising – what do they have in common? Without doubt it’s possible to put together a  broad list of features common to all these products, but we would like to pick out probably the most important: the widely applied technology of computer graphics –3D -  is an integral part of them.

Today 3D is practically all the special effects in the cinema.  It is a big part of worldwide animated cartoons; it is computer games, unthinkable without three-dimensional models and characters and, finally, advertising in which 3D stared to be used quite a long time ago.

In point of fact, 3D is beginning to separate out as an independent industry.  This worldwide tendency has not left Russia by the wayside.  Confirmation of that are the recent sensations “Night watch” and “Day watch”.  The special effects for these films were not created by the film studios “Tabbak” and “Bazelevs Production” (producers of the films) but by independent companies specialising in 3D graphics.

As shown in practice, Russian 3D professionals are totally competitive and can undertake projects on the highest worldwide level.  This is also confirmed by the western companies which  more and more frequently give orders for 3D graphics to Russian studios.

However the latest ones have come up against an unexpected problem.  It turns out that they are simply not in a position to process the quantity of orders that have descended on them recently.  The fault lies in the catastrophic shortage of qualified people.  One can only guess how many opportunities Russia is missing due to this. Indeed, according to foreign experts, the annual turnover in computer graphics on the world market is 250 billion dollars.

The largest research corporation IDC reports that since 1995, in the 28 countries and regions covered by its research, more than 20 thousand companies working in the field of 3D have been created.

No-one has even tried to estimate the Russian computer graphics market, but it is obvious that the shortage of qualified people, and the absence of institutions for teaching the professions relating to 3D computer graphics, are slowing the growth of the indigenous market.

So why is no one interested in this question?  Why do all the efforts to get this across to those who talk about the need to develop high technology activities in Russia end up in failure?

So, for instance, on the 3rd of October 2005 the editorial board of the online magazine “Render.ru” published an open letter to the President of the Russian Federation in which the publication’s journalists raised the question of the shortage of professionals in 3D.  No reply has been received.  Meanwhile the problem takes on a global character, but in Russia there is simply nowhere to get these specialists from. There isn’t a single educational establishment, not a single university which prepares professionals in the required specialisations.  Moreover it became clear that Russian labour legislation (namely, The Qualification Handbook of the Duties of Managers, Specialists and Others Confirmed by a Resolution of the Russian Ministry of Labour dated 21.08.98 – editor’s note) does not envisage the relevant professions – modeller, tester, visualiser, composer, animator.  Therefore the Russian studios have to enter in the employment documents of the new generation of specialists job titles which belong to the last century, when no one had even heard of 3D graphics. So a modeller becomes “artist-constructor”, visualiser becomes “artist-stage manager”, and animators become “artist-animators”.  And 3D animation is a long way from classical animation.

Today the managers and 3D specialists from animation studios are convinced that the problem can only be resolved by the creation and development of a fully-fledged system of education in 3D professions.  But this question is so complicated economically and in practice that to solve it requires the business community, specialist practitioners, and secondary schools to join forces.

Nevertheless the situation calls for immediate action.  This is exactly why the studio “Render.ru”, part of the “ALS Group” and the online magazine of the same name were the first who decided to independently undertake concrete steps in this direction.

Specifically through their efforts in St Petersburg, an Information and Training Centre for Computer Graphics “Render.ru” is being created.  The Centre’s priority is preparation of specialists for work with 3D graphics, and popularisation of three-dimensional technology in Russia.  The official opening of the Centre to visitors is planned for the15th of September 2006.

At the present time the Render.ru centre is actually working and the first group of students has been selected.  Every day consultations take place about the process of training and the nearest open events.  The Centre is located right by the studio, which gives it a great possibility for creating a unique training system, based on and orientated around “live” production.   The branches of learning should not only be thorough in the theory but in practical aspects so that students are ready to undertake the most complicated tasks from the very first day.

Now it is necessary to get the information to those who, in the first place, are interested.  As became evident, the majority of graduates of Russian universities, including art colleges (and they specifically are the most likely candidates for training in 3D graphics) don’t even suspect that there is such specialisation as modeller or visualiser. Just a few know that studios exist where they offer more than high pay, but also very interesting work, allowing all the potential of young, talented artists to be realised, and sometimes even to get them known worldwide.
